Terms of service
Effective September 12, 2026
The short version: use it for yourself, don't abuse it, pay for the paid plan if you're on it, and understand that because your data is encrypted with a key only you hold, losing both your password and your recovery code destroys your history permanently. Everything below is that, in more detail.
Agreeing to this
By creating an account or using The Pot, you agree to these terms. If you do not, do not use the service. The Pot is operated by a sole proprietor based in Pennsylvania, United States.
What the service is
The Pot turns a monthly budget into a daily allowance and tracks what you spend against it. You type what you spent; there is no bank connection and we never ask for one. Some plans allow more than one person to share a pot.
What this is not
The Pot is not financial advice. It does arithmetic on figures you type and shows you patterns in them. It is not a financial adviser, an accountant, a bank or a money transmitter, it does not hold or move money, and nothing it shows you is a recommendation. Decisions about your money are yours, and for anything consequential you should talk to someone qualified.
The figures are only as good as what you enter. We do not reconcile against your bank and cannot tell you that you have forgotten to log something.
Your account, your key, and the part you cannot undo
You are responsible for your password and your recovery code. Because everything you log is encrypted with a key derived from your password, and because we hold no copy of that key:
- We cannot reset your password and keep your history. A password reset restores access to the account; your recovery code is what restores access to the data.
- If you lose both your password and your recovery code, your history is permanently unrecoverable. There is no support path, no backup and no exception. This is a consequence of the encryption, not a policy we could choose to relax.
- Anyone who has your password can read your pot. Keep it to yourself, and use a different one from the password you use anywhere else.
We show you the recovery code once, when your account is created, and ask you to confirm you have saved it. Please actually save it.
Sharing a pot
Inviting someone to your pot gives them the key to it. They can read everything in that pot, past and future, and log entries of their own. Only invite people you would show the whole thing to.
Removing someone stops their access going forward. It cannot un-see what they have already seen, and it cannot reach a copy they made.
Acceptable use
Do not:
- Use the service to break the law, or to store anything unlawful.
- Attempt to access another person's account or pot, probe for vulnerabilities against accounts that are not yours, or interfere with the service's operation.
- Resell the service, or run it as infrastructure behind something you charge for, without asking us first.
- Automate against it in a way that degrades it for other people.
Security research on your own account is welcome. If you find something, tell us at hello@usethepot.com before you tell anyone else, and we will not come after you for looking.
Plans and payment
There is a free plan and a paid plan. The paid plan is billed monthly or annually at the prices shown on the pricing page at the time you subscribe, and it renews automatically until you cancel.
Payments are processed by Paddle, which is the merchant of record for every purchase. Paddle handles the checkout, the card, the receipts and any sales tax or VAT. Your purchase is therefore also subject to Paddle's own terms and buyer protections, which apply alongside these and win where they are more generous.
Prices can change. If they change for a plan you are already on, we will tell you before it takes effect and you can cancel rather than accept it.
Cancelling and refunds
- You can cancel at any time. You keep the paid features until the end of the period you have already paid for, and you are not billed again.
- If the product is not what you expected, write to hello@usethepot.com within 14 days of a payment and we will refund it. We would rather refund you than argue.
- Cancelling never deletes your data. Extra pots become read-only and your history stays exactly where it is. If you come back, it is still there.
Availability
We try to keep it running and we do not promise that it always will be. The service is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind, and there is no uptime guarantee. It depends on third parties — hosting, database, payments — whose failures we do not control.
We may change or discontinue features. If we were ever to shut the service down, we would give you notice and time to get your data out while you still hold the key to it.
Limits on what we owe you
To the fullest extent the law allows, The Pot is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, for lost data, or for financial decisions you make while using it. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim — which, on a free account, is nothing.
Some jurisdictions do not allow some of these exclusions, and nothing here removes a right you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.
Ending it
You can stop using the service whenever you like, and ask us at hello@usethepot.com to delete your account. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, that is being used to harm someone, or where we are legally required to; where it is reasonable to, we will tell you why first.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The effective date at the top moves when we do, and for a change that materially affects you we will email the address on your account. Continuing to use the service after that is how you accept the new version.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Nothing here affects mandatory consumer protections in the country where you live.
